Nature’s isotonic sports drink

image1There really is no need for artificial,  shop-bought isotonic sports drinks when there exists in nature an ideal combination of fruits and vegetables.

Apples, cucumber and celery contain electrolytes, carbohydrate and a high water content providing a very effective hydration solution.

Carbohydrate and electrolytes added to water enable the body to absorb fluid more easily than water alone. This is the principle behind shop-bought sports drinks but with the disadvantage of artificial ingredients and an unnecessary price tag.

The following juice recipe helps you to replace the electrolytes that are lost through sweating, hydrates the body and provides energy to keep going if consumed during endurance activity.

  • Juice 2 apples, 2 stalks of celery and half a cucumber for 200ml of juice. Top this up with 50ml water, stir and consume immediately.
  • You can double this quantity for all exercise sessions lasting more than an hour.
